Keep an Eye Out for Nuisance Wildlife

When thinking about pests that pose a threat to health and property, termites and rodents often come to mind, yet there are several wildlife animals to be on the lookout for as well. Wildlife like squirrels, raccoons, opossums and bats all seek shelter away from cold winter temperatures, and your home offers the ideal escape. Eco Systems Pest Control in partnership with the National Pest Management Association, is sharing ways homeowners can prevent these animals from making your home theirs this winter.
“Many expect to have a run in or two with spiders or mice during the colder months, but most homeowners are surprised when a wildlife animal is found indoors,” said Staff Entomologist, Eric Polito. “Not only do these animals pose a threat to your property, they can expose your family to dangerous diseases, making it important to keep them outside where they belong.”
Some wildlife animals carry rabies, a potentially deadly disease transmitted from the bite of an infected animal. According to the CDC, more than 90% of animal rabies cases occur in wildlife. To keep out nuisance wildlife, Eco Systems Pest Control, Inc. and the National Pest Management Association recommend the following tips:
- Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows
- Screen vents and openings to chimneys
- Keep food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly in sealed receptacles
- Keep tree limbs cut back six to eight feet from the roofline
- Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and five feet off of the ground

“Keep an eye out for signs of gnaw marks on wires, insulation or walls, droppings in the attic or basement and scurrying noises in the walls as these could indicate wildlife pest intrusions.” added Staff Entomologist, Eric Polito. “When cornered, these pests can become dangerous, making it imperative to call a professional for safe and prompt removal.”
